Before you get anything pierced there are a few things you need to know. The first is to get informed. Hepatitis C which is an infectious liver disease has been possibly linked to body piercings that were not performed by professionals. Body piercings should only be done by professionals who follow safety and health guidelines practice disease prevention. You should never try to pierce a friend or yourself.

Never let a body piercing shop pierce your body with a stud gun. This method of body piercing is not condoned by professionals because the guns cannot be completely cleaned, can cause jewelry to become embedded in the skin and can cause significant tissue damage.

During the time they are healing, body piercings are also vulnerable to other types of infections. Although you may get your body piercing by a professional, you still need to take very good care of your new body piercing to prevent permanent skin damage, prevent infection, and promote healing.

Always avoid cheap jewelry if you decide to get pierced. Invest in quality jewelry instead, such as titanium, 14K gold or surgical stainless steel. Wearing only gold jewelry immediately following the body piercing is usually a good idea. Some people find they are allergic to other kinds of metal.

Do not remove your jewelry for any period during the healing period or it may close. After the body piercing has healed, it will shrink rather than close if the jewelry is removed.

It is normal for the body piercing to produce a white discharge during the healing period. However, if the discharge turns yellow in color, this is probably a sign of infection. Other symptoms may include excess redness, inflammation, swelling, and pain. Do not, under any circumstances, remove your jewelry. The opening of the body piercing will close and trap the infection inside if the jewelry is removed.

You should clean your body piercing with a non iodized sea salt mixture packaged or a sterile saline solution that contains no additives. You should also wash the body piercing with liquid germicidal or antimicrobial soap. Never use petroleum or alcohol based products. They can trap bacteria and irritate the body piercing.

Ask Your Physician

Take your time while looking for a body piercing shop to pierce you. Find somewhere who is a professional and has proper accreditation. Before you get your body piercing, ask your physician about taking an antibiotic just prior to and after the body piercing. This is especially true for tongue piercings. Nose rings and belly rings are all the rage these days and with a little care you can wear yours safely.
