Back from Africa!

January 11th, 2011
When I looked at the last date on this blog, I was shocked to see that it was November 30th!  I think that this is the longest I’ve ever gone without a blog entry.  I’ll blame it on the Christmas rush and our trip to Mozambique and South Africa, but now I’m back and everything is in full swing.
Although this is a jewelry blog, I am including some of the photos I took of the wildlife at Kruger in South Africa.  The animals roam free and will walk around you and your car (hopefully you IN your car; it is not recommended to get out).  I saw amazing things, including two hippos crashing into the water to take an evening dip - they swim like dolphins, lifting themselves partially out of the water - and real, live lions within 30 feet of me (5 of them at one time!).  The sights and sounds of Africa have already had an affect on the colours and lampwork beads I am using and I have just begun to translate experiences and sights into jewelry.

Above, the pattern of some fire agate stones reminds me of giraffes (Fire Agate Jewelry) while the Swarovski crystal bracelet below has the colouring of a lion.

The chalcedony bracelet, above, features lampwork beads with the giraffe pattern. Below, a chalcedony bracelet is the “zebra bracelet” for obvious reasons.
One of the most amazing things to me is that it can be so very, very hot and humid one place in the world and be so very cold in another, and that we can go from one to another in the span of two days!

        Aeryn

        January 10th, 2011

I’ve generally never been a huge fan of lockets coz the local supplies always didn’t yield very pretty lockets, nor seem sturdy enough for long time use. But recently i managed to get my hands on a batch of heirloom lockets that were made from the same machines that made lockets 50 years ago. Yes, proper heirloom stuff made to last for decades.

I figured this locket would be a good piece of jewelry to start this decade. Aeryn features a thick brass filigree locket measuring 45mm width. I probably can’t explain how good this feels in your hands, except that it’s got a really good weight & sturdiness that you get when you touch good quality products. Some things just feel solidly built and give you that assurance y’know.
Currently on a 37″ antique brass finished cable chain, length is customizable. For more views on this lovely, click here, here & here.
I know that the price may seem exceptionally high (and i’m not marking up much on it, not that i usually do but you get my point), but i’d assure you when this lasts you at least 10 years, you’d probably look at it differently.
        Retail Price: SGD48

                      Nose Piercing Aftercare Tips

You must at all times make it a point to keep your hands clean prior to touching your nose piercing. You need to do this to ensure that your hands are not the source of contamination for the area that has been pierced. The use of sterile cotton, cotton gauze or other disinfected material should be used for cleaning from the second night onwards.

The curing of an ordinary wound and the healing of a nose piercing is significantly dissimilar. For a normal wound the body simply has to restore and rejoin the injured tissue, but with nose piercing, this process is made difficult by the presence of an unfamiliar substance, the jewelry.

The healing period for nostril and septum piercings can take between six and twelve weeks.

The Most Common Type of Ear Piercings

                                        January 5th, 2011

For many, an ear piercing is the gateway to other piercings. The ear piercing also happens to be one of the most common forms of body modification in the United States. While some many not take it as far, there are those who have actually pioneered new styles of ear piercings. Today, there are 10 common types of ear piercings.
                                        Helix Piercings
The helix piercing is the second most common type of ear piercing. It is located on the upper cartilage of the ear. This type of piercing can be done with either a stud, a hoop or a cuff style of piercing. The healing time for this piercing is lengthy at 6 to 8 months and any early removal can lead to premature closure of the piercing.

                                        Industrial Ear Piercings

The industrial ear piercing is quickly growing in popularity. It features a bar that goes through two holes in the upper cartilage of the ear. Unfortunately, this piercing takes an extremely long time to heal: up to twelve months. Any removal, poking or prodding can lead to serious infections.

                                        Dermal Punches

The dermal punch is generally more popular with men than with women. This piercing actually punches out a piece of the ear from the piercing. They can be located on either the lobe or the cartilage in the flat area of the ear. They can be stretched to fit larger gauge piercings, but cartilage is more difficult to ‘stretch’ than a lobe dermal punch. Healing time varies based on the location of the piercing itself.
                                        Rook Piercings

Rook piercings are known to be troublesome piercings and their position can vary from ear to ear due to high migration rates. They also have a frequently high rejection rate and most piercers will not pierce someone who does not have enough space for the piercing. These piercings are located on the area of the ear known as the anti-helix and are often referred to as anti-helix piercings. Their rate of healing varies by individual as well as spacing of the piercing.

                                        Conch Piercings
There are two types of conch piercings for the ear: the inner and outer conch. The inner conch piercing is located toward the center of the ear cartilage and uses a hoop piercing sized to fit the ear. The outer conch piercing sits farther out on the ear, on the same center cartilage. These piercings heal within 8 to 10 weeks.

                                        Tragus Piercings
The tragus piercing is located on the cartilage flap directly in front of ear canal. There is also a piercing known as the anti-tragus piercing which is located on the flap of cartilage above the ear lobe, but below the tragus piercing. These piercings are similar in care and can both be extremely painful. Most tragus and anti-tragus piercings heal within eighteen weeks.

                                        Ear Lobe Piercings
The most common form of ear piercing is the lobe piercing. The lobe is the bottom-most tissue on the ear. Generally, these piercings heal within 4 to 6 weeks and are considered to be the least painful of all ear piercings.

                                        Daith Piercings
The daith (pronounced day-th,) piercing is located on the cartilage on the innermost part of the ear, closest to the head by the ear canal. The word daith is a variation of the hebrew word, daath, which translates to ‘knowledge.’ These piercings take approximately 6 to 8 weeks to fully heal and jewelry can be switched out at this time.
Proper care of any piercing is extremely important to prevent infection and migration as well as premature closure. Piercings are a great way to show off a person’s individuality.

Most Popular Sexy Women Inked Lace Corsed Piercing Tattoos

                                        January 3rd, 2011

Tattoos are the only massive change you can make to your body aside from having surgery, right? I don’t think so. Many artists aren’t afraid to do the big stuff. And the big stuff ain’t always tattoos. Many body piercing shops are opening their doors to unique surface piercings and even the difficult corset piercing.Lace-Corset-Tattoo-Artist

Most people have probably seen photos of corset piercings online, though they are normally laced to appear like the laces on a corset. These photos depict, 99% of the time, play piercings or at least improperly done piercings that will reject.

Knowledgeable artists do not do play piercing over lasting ones unless that’s what you specifically request. A well researched corset piercing will take more than 2 hours to draw, with good spacing and placement to limit piercing rejection, and an hour, at the very least and with a high pain threshold, to pierce. A special barbell, known as a surface bar, should be used on most surface piercings. These barbells are shaped like an upside down staple, with two sharp 90 degree angles on each side. These help keep it deeply beneath the skin and make it harder to push out.

                                        Lace-Corset-Tattoo-ArtistLace-Corset-TattoosSexy-Lace-Corset-Tattoos

Surface bars, dermal anchors or tygon tubing are currently the only appropriate items for a surface piercing that is not for temporary purposes. After the piercing heals, in about a year, the caps on the surface bar can be traded with a new cap that has a hoop on top. Ribbon or lace can be brought through these hoops and tied for the unique corset piercing look. This look is not for everyday wear though.

Corset piercings should only be done by an experienced piercing professional who has experience and success with other types of surface piercings. Preferably the artist would have success with surface piercings on the part of the body you want to have the corset done on. An experienced piercer will want to do regular checkups as well.

If you are not interested in a permanent corset piercing, but want something fancy for a special occasion, you can use captive bead rings. These allow the corset piercing to be laced immediately, though again, they should not be left laced for an extensive period of time. The entire piercing should be removed in under two weeks to minimize the signs of scarring or other damage.
